Nairobi National Park is located south of Nairobi, a 4.5-mile drive from the Capital’s CBD and along the A104 road. The park is situated around 5,500 miles above sea level and comprises open savanna, wooded regions, and river valleys. Established in 1946, Nairobi National Park is Kenya's first national park and a symbol of the country's commitment to conservation. Its proximity to the city makes it unique, offering a blend of urban and wild experiences. The best time to visit is June-October, January-March. The park is easily accessible by road from the city center, approximately 7 kilometers away. Visitors can use private vehicles, taxis, or ride-sharing services. Matatus (shared minibuses) and buses operate routes to the park from various parts of Nairobi.
The park features open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests, with mostly flat terrain and scattered rocky outcrops. Wildlife includes lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and over 400 bird species. Most game viewing is done by vehicle, and guided walking safaris are available with a ranger. Notable points of interest include the Ivory Burning Site Monument, Hippo Pools, Nairobi Safari Walk, and the Orphanage. The park is also a critical rhino sanctuary and offers unique photographic opportunities with wildlife against the city skyline.
