Maasai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Located in the Great Rift Valley in southern Kenya, bordering the Serengeti in Tanzania. Established in 1961, the Maasai Mara is world-renowned for the Great Migration and its rich Maasai heritage. The reserve is a vital part of Kenya's tourism and conservation history. The best time to visit is July-October (Migration), December-March. By road: 5-6 hours from Nairobi. By air: Several airstrips serve the reserve.

The Mara is characterized by rolling grasslands, acacia trees, and riverine forests. It is home to wildebeest, zebras, lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, and more. Game drives are best for the Great Migration and Big Five, and hot air balloon safaris are available for sunrise wildlife viewing. Points of interest include the Mara River, Oloololo Escarpment, and Talek and Sand Rivers. The Mara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key area for predator research.
