Northwest of Mt. Kilimanjaro, on the Kenya/Tanzania border. Gazetted as a national park in 1974, Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park has a rich history of Maasai culture and wildlife research. The best time to visit is June-October, January-February. By road: 4 hours from Nairobi. By air: Amboseli airstrip.
Amboseli features swamps, savannah, and acacia woodland, with flat terrain and seasonal lakes. Wildlife includes elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and over 400 bird species. Game drives are excellent for elephant viewing. Points of interest include Observation Hill, Sinet Delta, and Lake Amboseli. The park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a center for elephant research.
