Half the World's Mountain Gorillas

Bwindi is home to over 500 mountain gorillas — roughly half the entire global population across four sectors of the forest: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector has habituated gorilla families assigned to trekking groups. Uganda's gorilla permit is $700 — significantly below Rwanda's, with comparable quality of encounter.

The Trek

Bwindi's terrain is steeper and denser than Rwanda's Volcanoes. Treks range from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the family has moved. The reward is a wilder, less manicured encounter — Bwindi feels genuinely remote, and the forest itself is an extraordinary ancient ecosystem.

The Chimpanzee Capital of East Africa

Kibale Forest holds the highest density of primates in Africa — and its 1,500 chimpanzees are the main attraction. The habituated groups in the Kanyanchu sector are tracked daily, and trekking permits allow one hour with a community once located. Chimpanzees move fast and noisily through the canopy — the encounter is frantic, joyful, and completely different from gorilla trekking.

Chimp Habituation Experience

For a deeper encounter, the full-day Chimp Habituation Experience follows researchers tracking a family from their morning nest sites through the forest for an entire day. You see social dynamics, territorial disputes, and hunting behaviour that the standard one-hour permit never reaches.

The Classic Uganda Itinerary

A 7-day Uganda itinerary covers Kibale (2 nights, chimp trekking), Queen Elizabeth National Park (2 nights, big game and the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha), and Bwindi (2 nights, gorilla trekking). Fly in and out of Entebbe — the road connections between parks are well-maintained.

Extending into Rwanda or Kenya

Uganda combines naturally with Rwanda (a gorilla trek in each country covers two different experiences) or with a Kenya Mara safari. Zuphoria builds Uganda as a standalone or as part of a broader East Africa circuit — depending on how much time you have.
